The GDN

Global Development Network

Launched in 1999, the Global Development Network (GDN) is an international organization of research and policy institutes promoting the generation, sharing, and application to policy of multidisciplinary knowledge for the purpose of development. It is founded on the premise that good policy research, properly applied, can accelerate development and improve people’s lives. GDN’s approach to policy relevant research is a multidisciplinary one, in that efforts to address development challenges must be informed by knowledge based on a variety of methodological approaches.

GDN’s strategic objectives are:

  • Building research excellence: Build research excellence and promote world class policy relevant research in developing countries working through regional network partners, research Institutes, and individual researchers.
  • Promoting networking: Foster networking across developing country partners/research institutes/researchers, and between them and global experts.
  • Expanding outreach: Promote outreach of world class research to researchers and to policy makers in regional and global forums on selected topics, and encourage policy makers’ exchange of ideas on selected issues.
  • Shaping global policy debates: Selectively promote developing and transition country policy research to help shape global policy debates.
